Why? - These Few Presidents

One of my favourite songs at the moment.

Romanians can crank out some pretty good trance tunes

First heard this song way back in one of Gareth Emery's guest mixes for ASoT 400. I finally decided to find out what it's called, and lo and behold the artist hails from Timisoara, where I spent a fun few days last summer. I think the song's way too long for how repetitive it is, but it's great as part of a mix.

Hot Chip - Ready for the Floor

I usually think that music videos are created to go along with a song, but I swear this song was made for this video - not the other way around. I don't like listening to this song on its own, but something about the video keeps making me want to watch it.

Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars

The music video is a little strange, but I love this song. Currently my most played song in iTunes.

The People's Republic of Socialist Romanistan

While I bought Muse's 'Black Holes and Revelations' back in 2006, I'm not one for music videos and I just came across this one for Knights of Cydonia (one of the best tracks on the album imo). I was surprised to see a Dacia 1310 in the video... and then to find out it was filmed on location in 'The Republic of Socialist Romanistan'. I didn't know Romania's doppelganger had both unicorns and laser guns - so much cooler than the real Romania.

Red Album

So after having seen the video for Weezer's Pork and Beans (thanks to Andy, I didn't know they made a video for it yet) I'm definitely going to buy Weezer's new album. Here's the video: I can't believe they got all these famous YouTube personalities to be in their video! Apparently Rivers Cuomo said that shooting it was like living inside his computer. So tomorrow, I'm going to go buy the album.

Music I Like

I was driving home from my girlfriend's the other day, listening to The Stills. I was thinking about how earlier that day we listened to her iPod in the car. Her music, although the same genre (vaguely categorized as "Rock"), is quite different, and I was wondering why I like mine more and she likes hers more. I've pointed out to her that her music often sounds like "pub music", something crazy and fun that would play in the background while you're getting smashed. She listens to a lot of British bands, and a lot of them are like that, happy, fun, exciting! My preference on the other hand is different, for lack of a better word. Driving a little further, it suddenly struck me why that is; ever since I was young, I always preferred music with minor harmonies. When I used to play piano, I always liked the more "minor" Classical era music, never really liked anything Baroque, and I loved the Romantic era pieces. My favourite classical music pieces (that I can name) include the second movement from Beethoven's seventh (A minor) and Mozart's Requiem (D minor). I obviously never learned to play those on the piano (cause they're not for piano and plus, I wasn't good enough), but my favourite piano pieces were also generally in minor keys. Twelve years later, I still prefer music with minor harmonies. A lot of my favourite bands generally write songs in minor keys. A good example would be System of a Down. A lot of their songs are in minor keys or at least have a lot of minor harmonies between the guitars or vocals or vocals and guitars. The Stills are another example. My girlfriend on the other hand likes Major harmonies, and that explains why the style of music we listen to is very different even though we may like exactly the same bands! Her favourite songs would sound very different from mine. On a side note, I do like a lot of songs that aren't in a minor key, there's just less of them.

Where my music is from

I haven't posted here in a week or so, and even thought this isn't really a quality post, I thought I'd do it anyway cause I'm bored. I was curious about where the bands I listen to are from, so I made a list of what nationality each band is. These bands I counted I actually listen to, as in I know (and enjoy) a lot of their songs. Anyway, these are my results:

  1. American - 52%
  2. Canadian and British - tie at 17% each
  3. Other - 14%

Clearly American bands FTW.
